SCALE POWER, School Edition begins with a 4-page warm-up, including a long tone warm-up (#1), two tonguing exercises - one for isolated attacks & one for connected attacks, and two finger warm-ups. These warm-up pages have been included at the request of band directors who have been using SCALE POWER for years.

SCALE POWER scale content begins with a 2-page scale reference, with the C scale and all of the flat scales (through 6 flats) on one page (#2), and all of the sharp scales (through 6 sharps) and a representative chromatic scale on the following page. (Octaves are stacked on all scales in the School Edition book.) With the exception of these two scale reference pages and the Blues Scales reference pages, all of the books in the School Edition series have been transposed for ease of use in a full band setting.

Next come the scale development pages, the heart of SCALE POWER. Beginning with the key of Concert C (# 3, #4), each key includes all of the common modes (ionian, dorian, phrygian, lydian, mixolydian, aeolian and locrian), five Technique Builders, and an Arpeggio Etude. The Aeolian mode is presented with all three variations - natural, harmonic, and melodic.

Please note that the sample pages to the left are from the trumpet book. Ranges have been adjusted for each instrument's book. Because the given ranges exceed the "normally acceptable" playing range of the instrument (to allow advanced players to work on range extension), all of the scales within the "normally acceptable" playing range of the instrument are marked with an asterisk (*).

The first step in gaining playing proficiency through scale-related studies is to master the scale and memorize the key signature. Then, to increase proficiency in each key, six Technique Builders are offered:

Arpeggio Study, Tonic Interval Study, Interval Study in 3rds, Interval Study in 4ths, Finger Coordination Study, and an Arpeggio Etude

Offering the same six Technique Builders in each key opens the door to prioritize and promote listening skills!

Playing jazz (improvisation) is the perfect way for each player to tap into their own creativity (and it's really fun). To that end, SCALE POWER includes the Blues Scales (#5) in every key.

The Scale Review charts (#6) are a great way to assess one's current scale proficiency, and to guide further practice by making the player aware of their strengths and their weaknesses. There are enough charts provided for the player to be able to assess their proficiency once a month for a year.

SCALE POWER, School Edition is only available to school band programs in bulk orders (30 books minimum). A purchase order from a school district or from a school's internal account is necessary in order to process and fill an order.
